Steps to Become a Pediatric Nurse

Choose your education. You can practice with an ADN or a BSN. The associate degree is faster; the bachelor's tends to open more doors.

Graduate from an accredited program. Look for accreditation from the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

Get licensed as an RN. Register for the NCLEX-RN as you near graduation. Pass it to qualify for a state-issued RN license.

Gain pediatric experience. Build it through pediatric clinical hours during your degree, your first RN roles, or community volunteering.

Earn certification. A credential like the Certified Pediatric Nurse (CPN) demonstrates your expertise and commitment to the specialty.

What Pediatric Nurses Do

Pediatric nurses work with patients who have not reached adulthood, and the work takes extra patience. Children often see healthcare as frightening. "The greatest part about being in pediatric nursing is that it becomes more than just a job," says Christian Leon, RN, BSN, who works at a children's hospital in Utah. "Kids depend on your compassion to get through the 'scary things,' and you need finesse to play by their rules to get the job done. Children bounce back so quickly, and it is the most rewarding part of my day to see a kid leave with a smile on their face."

Duties vary by setting but commonly include:

  • Evaluating and documenting symptoms
  • Checking vital signs
  • Completing diagnostic tests
  • Administering medication
  • Performing minor procedures like drawing blood or giving vaccinations
  • Educating parents about a child's injury or treatment

Skills That Matter

Communication. You need to make young patients feel safe and discuss concerns clearly with parents.

Creativity. Engaging kids takes invention. "One time I played a game of Uno with a patient to gain their trust; then they let me do vital signs and a physical assessment," Leon says.

Time management. "Kids play by their own rules, so you need to be able to manage time well for whatever they throw at you," Leon says.

Problem solving. Spotting a health problem fast and starting care protects patient safety.

Compassion. "To kids, this could very well be the scariest thing they have had to deal with," Leon says. Meeting that fear with empathy makes the whole visit go better.

Where Pediatric Nurses Work

  • Hospitals: Children's hospitals or pediatrics departments, including ICUs and oncology units.
  • Physicians' offices: Initial health assessments, updating records, and obtaining test samples.
  • Community clinics: Responsibilities similar to a physician's office.
  • Surgical centers: Pediatric nurses who specialize in surgery, with the certification it requires.
  • Schools: Caring for sick students and maintaining immunization, vision, and other health records.

Education Requirements

There are two paths: an ADN or a BSN. The associate degree gets you working sooner, but some employers require a bachelor's, so the extra time can be worth it for the wider job pool.

Associate Degree in Nursing

  • Prerequisites: A high school diploma or GED. Some programs also require anatomy and physiology.
  • Core curriculum: Pharmacology, nursing essentials, psychology, and nursing care across patient types.
  • Clinical requirements: Hands-on work in simulation centers and supervised clinical settings, up to about 435 hours.
  • Time to complete: 18 to 24 months, depending on your pace.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing

  • Prerequisites: A high school diploma or GED, plus chemistry, microbiology, anatomy, and physiology.
  • Core curriculum: Advanced courses in health assessment, research, management, and care competencies.
  • Clinical requirements: Rotations, labs, and simulation work across settings, usually 700 to 800 hours.
  • Time to complete: About four years.

Online Programs

Hybrid programs let you take coursework online for flexibility, but clinical rotations still happen in person under supervision. If you are already an RN with clinical experience pursuing a bachelor's, some programs run fully online.

Choosing a School

  • Accreditation: Look for ACEN or CCNE accreditation, which signals a quality education.
  • Job placement and career counseling: Useful as you look for your first job.
  • NCLEX-RN pass rate: A high first-time pass rate can indicate a strong program.
  • Graduate success: A high share of recent graduates working as nurses reflects how employers regard the program.

Licensure

A degree alone is not enough. Every prospective nurse must pass the NCLEX-RN. The computer-adaptive exam tailors itself to your answers, ranging from 85 to 150 questions, and ends once it determines with confidence whether you meet the passing standard. You have up to five hours. Content focuses on safe and effective care, health promotion and maintenance, psychosocial integrity, and physiological integrity.

Once you pass, apply to your state board for a license. Requirements vary but may include fingerprints or a background check.

Gain Experience

With your license, start looking for pediatric roles. Pediatric clinical rotations from school can show you are qualified to work with children. Once you build professional experience, you can pursue certification.

Certifications

Certification brings professional recognition, a possible salary bump, and more job opportunities. "Certification is valuable in terms of demonstrating knowledge," Leon says. "It does help during the interview process and gives you priority over other applicants."

Certified Pediatric Nurse (CPN)

  • What it is: The most common pediatric certification, offered by the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB).
  • Who it's for: All pediatric nurses, including those in home care, public health, schools, outpatient clinics, and hospitals.
  • Requirements: An RN license plus 1,800 hours as an RN in pediatric nursing within the past 24 months, or five years as an RN in pediatrics and 3,000 hours within the past five years.
  • Exam: A three-hour, computer-based exam of 175 multiple-choice questions covering assessment, health promotion, management, and clinical problems.

Pediatric Nursing Certification (PED-BC)

  • What it is: An entry-level clinical certification offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
  • Who it's for: Nurses with pediatric experience ready to demonstrate their knowledge.
  • Requirements: Two years full-time as an RN, at least 2,000 hours of pediatric clinical practice within the past three years, and 30 hours of pediatric continuing education within the past three years.
  • Exam: A three-hour, computer-based test of 150 questions covering assessment and diagnosis, planning and implementation, and evaluation.

Critical Care Registered Nurse Pediatric (CCRN)

  • What it is: A certification for nurses caring for acutely and critically ill children, offered by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN).
  • Who it's for: Pediatric nurses in intensive care, cardiac care, trauma, or critical care transport.
  • Requirements: An RN or APRN license and 1,750 to 2,000 clinical hours over the past two to five years.
  • Exam: A three-hour, 150-question exam on clinical judgment, professional caring, and ethical practice, taken on paper or computer.

Subspecialty Certifications

Some pediatric nurses specialize further:

  • CPON: Certified Pediatric Oncology Nurse
  • CHPPN: Certified Hospice and Palliative Pediatric Nurse
  • CPEN: Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurse
  • CPHON: Certified Pediatric Hematology Oncology Nurse
  • RNC-NIC: Registered Nurse Certification-Neonatal Intensive Care

Salary and Career Outlook

Registered nurses earn a median annual salary of $93,600, according to the BLS. The BLS does not break out specialties, but a bachelor's degree and a specialty certification can raise your pay.

California holds all 10 of the highest-paying metro areas for nurses, driven by a high cost of living, a strong nursing union, and a minimum nurse-to-patient ratio. Nurses are in demand nationwide, with the largest concentrations in the most populous states and metros.

The BLS projects RN jobs to grow 4.9% through 2034 as an aging population needs more care. RNs with a BSN and certifications have the best shot at sought-after positions.
