Working the holidays does not mean the unit has to look bare. A few DIY decorations from supplies already on hand can lift the mood for patients stuck in the hospital and for the staff covering the shift. Here are ideas that are cheap, quick, and made from things you already have.

1. The Christmas tree

Skip the real tree. It eats space and time. Stack and shape unused gloves into a tree, or blow a few up for a fuller look. For a tabletop version at the station, glue empty vial caps into miniature trees and line up several.

2. Hallway decor

Repurpose empty prescription bottles into string lights along the hallway. Turn a clean, unused bedpan into a reindeer. In a cardiac unit or cath lab, tape up a few festive ECG strips for an inside joke that fits the floor.

3. Ornaments

Trade store-bought balls for vial-cap ornaments. They cost nothing and you only need to wait for the med nurse to finish her pass to collect enough. Fill clear ornaments with anything nurse themed if you want to get fancy.

4. The wreath

A wreath built from spare station items beats a generic store one. Add a personal touch or whatever extras you can scrounge. Be creative with it.

5. Gifts

Patients still deserve a little something. A small, thoughtful gift with a personalized tag and a warm note goes a long way for someone confined over the holidays. Do not forget the coworkers pulling the shift with you. A personalized stocking or a gag gift keeps morale up.

More ideas

School nurses can make decorations festive and informative at once. ER nurses have their own spin. And a little humor never hurts. However you decorate, the point is to make the floor feel warmer for everyone stuck there.
